Types of Ancestral DNA tests

There are 2 types of DNA (nuclear and mtDNA) and 3 types of ancestral DNA tests:

1   –   Nuclear (Autosomal + X-DNA)

An autosomal DNA test looks at ALL the ancestral lines of a tester back about 5 generations or 200 years.

tester = female tester or male tester

An X-DNA test tests the X-DNA inheritance of a tester.

2   –   mt-DNA

An mt-DNA test examines a testers matri-lineal line only.

3   –   Y-DNA

A Y-DNA test looks at a males patri-lineal line only.

This test can ONLY be taken by a male as a male will inherit his fathers Y sex-chromosome.
